It’s a done deal: Miller signs

August 17, 2009 · 1 Comment

shelbymillerThis afternoon, the Cardinals held a press conference to announce the signing of first round draft pick Shelby Miller.

Miller was taken 19th overall in this years draft but had until 11:00 pm (CT) tonight (Monday, August 17) to sign.

Miller signed for a $2.875 million bonus; a franchise record for a high school player. The righthander from Texas was reportedly “demanding” $4 million after the Cardinals gave $3.1 million to 16 year old Wagner Mateo.

Without even playing a pro game, the flame-thrower from Brownwood High finds himself high up the prospects list already…and will likely climb quickly.

The club has always seemed to prefer collegiate players over high schoolers, yet the team spent a $6 mil on teenagers this summer.

There is no word on when/where Miller will begin his road to the majors.

Miller had accepted a scholarship to attend Texas A&M before the draft, and intially said he had “no problem” with going to college before being a big leaguer.

His options:

Sign with the second most decorated baseball team of all time for nearly $3 million.
…or…
Play for Texas A&M and not make a dime.

Yeah, I can see his hesitation.

twitter

StLouis_Sports: Lot of people on here are hating on the Shelby Miller pick because they simply dont know him. Ignorance is bliss?

KSDK_Sports: Shelby miller told me on KFNS that he will sign with cardinals no doubt.

StLouis_Sports: From what I hear, Shelby Miller isn’t asking for an island in the Caribbean… Unless its outrageous, just pay him and move on with it.

HoosierCardinal: Solid draft choice cards. Shelby miller = flamethrower. Now if stl could end this 5 game losing streak.

Erik_Manning: Says Shelby Miller “Definitely, I’m going to sign a contract with the St. Louis Cardinals.”

StLouis_Sports: ….. Something tells me we are not gonna lock Shelby Miller down. If that is the case, I wonder whether FO did it to save money.

Wheels37: LOVE the Shelby Miller pick – gotta draft potential stars in the 1st round and this kid has potential. Love the attitude too…

StLouis_Sports: I’m hearing Shelby Miller is demanding $4 mil? If so, he will not be signed IMO. DeWitt doesnt even want to give that to proven MLB players.

MattBaker31: Shelby Miller: I see playing for the Cardinals nad being just as good as Nolan Ryan and Josh Beckett.

CardinalsGM: Maybe the Rams can use Shelby Miller..averages 42.25 yds per punt in HS…

StLouis_Sports: Gibson > Miller. But I do really like Miller. He will move along through the minors fast.

Erik_Manning: Jeff Luhnow says Shelby Miller is “no slam dunk” to sign. Not going to be a quick signing, per Luhnow.

stltoday: Eager Shelby Miller says “Cardinals have a lot to offer”

codygrubbs: I hope the cardinals did their homework with Shelby Miller.

Jram33: The Cardinals select Shelby Miller, Great job Cardinals.

cards3577: Cardinals pick Shelby Miller. Fastball MPH is 98. He has 4 pitches. Fastball, curveball, changeup, and slider.

j_stine31: Shelby Miller: Best high school fastball in the draft. Can throw upper 90’s, usually at mid-90’s consistently. Plus curve.

scottyerbic: Shelby Miller is a good pick. I am very happy with that. Big kid with live ball. They say he can move up quick.

strike3forums: Shelby Miller at pick 19 for the Cards could be a big draft steal, especially with Duncan as a future coach for the young hurler.

brydenc: Cardinals draft RHP Shelby Miller right outta high school. Sounds like a good pick.

eli314: Cardinals take Shelby Miller with their first round pick…he brings the heat!!

j_stine31: Good pick by the cards with Shelby Miller as long as we sign him. Best player available, and gotta love the flamethrower potential.

dgoold: Cardinals take RHP Shelby Miller, a high school pitcher, their first prep pitcher as the first pick since 1991. Cards throw curve.

MatthewHLeach: Cards select HS RHP Shelby Miller. Verrry interesting.

StLouis_Sports: Shelby Miller. I do not mind that at all. He can BRING it.

Cardinals Surprise Most With High School Pitcher

With the 19th pick of the 2009 MLB Draft.. the St. Louis Cardinals select.. Shelby Miller

With the 19th pick of the 2009 MLB Draft.. the St. Louis Cardinals select.. Shelby Miller

Going into today, fans expected Matthew Purke. Going into the pick, fans expected Rex Brothers. I don’t think anybody expected Shelby Miller.

It’s just another example of why the MLB Draft is the toughest to predict. Baseball’s Mel Kiper, Jonathan Mayo, had a hard time foreseeing this year’s Draft. And to my knowledge, nobody had us taking Miller.

Shelby Miller, all 6’4” 215 pounds of him, was rated as the best high school pitcher in the draft, and the ninth pitcher overall (per Baseball America). With Brownwood (Texas) HS this season, Miller is 9-1 with a 1.69 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 66 innings pitched.

It was an interesting pick due to the Cardinals needs and preferences. Going in, St. Louis kept saying they wanted to stock up on left handed pitching. With that in mind, it was no surprise that the club went with a righty in the first round tonight and passed on left handed pitchers that included Brothers, Andy Oliver, Tyler Skaggs, and James Paxton.

What was a surprise, however, was that Miller is in high school. Management has always gone in with a “college over high school” mentality. That had everyone thinking Lipscomb’s Rex Brothers as the Draft went on. So when the Cards took the young gun, many people were left scratching their heads.

He was the first pitcher since Brian Barber in 1991 to be taken in the first round by the Cardinals.

Don’t know him? Most don’t. Barber ended his career after four seasons in the bigs. He finished up 5-8 with a 6.77 ERA and 59 strikeouts….. in his career.

With the selection of Shelby, players like Rex Brothers, Kyle Gibson, Randal Grichuk, Tanner Scheppers, and Tim Wheeler had to look elsewhere.

Miller is a top 15-20 prospect on most people’s boards, and was 11th on mine. He threw three straight no hitters while he was a junior in high school last season and now has four no-no’s total (one perfecto).

His four pitches and solid mechanics really attract scouts as well. Miller rocks a 96-98 MPH fastball with movement, a tight spinning slider at 87, a 12-6 dropping curveball at about 73-77, and a rarely-used (but being worked on) changeup near 81 miles per hour.

His high arm slot has actually been compared to Joel Pineiro’s in some scouting reports. Jonathan Mayo tells MLB.com that “Miller throws harder than Purke, and is more projectable than Matzek.”

One of the issues with Miller is the recurring problem with this Draft. Signability.

When Derrick Goold spoke with Jeff Lunhow after the pick, Lunhow explained, “It’s no slam dunk that we’re going to sign him quickly. If we even sign him at all.”

As soon as Cardinal fans got word of that, the conspiracy theories rapidly developed. Many wondered if the Front Office even intended on signing their selection in the first place.

I have to be honest, it would not surprise me. If DeWitt doesn’t want to pay to bring in help from outside of the organization, why should we expect him to give a high schooler the $4 million he wants?

The fan on Twitter that basically started this talk put it this way: “Is this a joke? Does the [Front Office] draft somebody they know they can’t sign just to get out of first round money?”

To answer his question though… I sure don’t hope so. But it would not surprise me. DeWitt’s cheap ass would be the one who pulled something like that and it makes me sick.

If, for some reason, we can’t grow a set and just give the kid some money, Miller would head off back to Texas to play for Texas A&M next season. He would be eligible in the draft again and 2011 and would likely be one of the top picks baring injury.

As far as getting drafted by the Cardinals is concerned, Miller seems happy with it. “The Cardinals are a team I’m real excited to be drafted by. College can come later. Ultimate goal is to play professional ball. Cardinals have a lot to offer. College, I just don’t see in my immediate future. I’m ready to play ‘ball.”

IF I was in the Front Office, I would do whatever possible to sign this guy. We can’t screw around and end up losing a first round draft pick for this year. From what I hear, Miller isn’t asking for an island in the Caribbean. As long as it isn’t anything outrageous, I would just give him his money, get him into the Minors, and move on with it.
